Zamples Uses Mono to Launch C# and VB.NET Code Samples Online

26 January 2005

Novell-sponsored Mono is being used to power live, online code examples written in C# and VB.NET, provided by Zamples. Mono is an open source version of the Microsoft .NET development platform that enables Linux and UNIX developers to build and deploy cross-platform .NET applications. Sponsored by Novell and led by Miguel de Icaza, the Mono project provides a productive development environment, stable APIs and a well-defined technology roadmap, plus the benefits of .NET for Linux and UNIX.

Zamples' online, quality-checked code samples and documentation accelerate developer proficiency by enabling them to quickly understand and use new and updated APIs from live code. Code examples are displayed in an HTML page and are automatically compiled and executed on the server. In addition to C# and VB.NET, Zamples currently supports computer languages Bash; Groovy; Haskell; HTML; Java 1.4, 5 and 6; JSP; Perl; Python and Ruby.

“The open source Mono development platform was a logical choice for Zamples to compile and execute CLR-based languages,” said Michael Slinn, Zamples founder and CTO. “Our public servers run Linux, and Mono's Linux support is excellent.”

Erik Dasque, Mono product manager for Novell, said, “Zamples enables software developers to quickly learn new programming languages and APIs by playing with live code examples. We are delighted that this valuable capability is now available to Mono and .NET developers.”

An initial set of code examples is freely available. Mono developers are invited to add their own examples to the online repository. For more information on the Mono project, visit http://www.mono-project.com.
