Novell Integrates Business Service Management into Data Center Solution Portfolio

Leveraging its recent acquisition of Managed Objects, Novell unveils BSM strategy

11 March 2009

Novell today announced a comprehensive suite of business service management (BSM) solution offerings that address strategic customer needs to reduce cost, manage complexity and mitigate risks within today’s complex IT enterprise. These solutions, which will be marketed as Novell® Business Service Management, extend Novell's portfolio by delivering strategic capabilities to more effectively manage and measure the performance of physical and virtual IT infrastructure as a set of services delivered to business users. Novell BSM is the industry’s first suite of Web 2.0-based solutions that allow organizations to reduce IT outages by 50 percent while lowering the operational risk inherent in every data center.

BSM is a fast growing market segment that gives businesses unprecedented control and visibility into critical IT functions. According to a report from Forrester Research, SLM/BSM was the third-strongest market in IT management software with an annual growth rate of 36 percent in 2008.1 BSM works by dynamically linking business-related services to underlying applications, workloads and infrastructure components to provide a business-driven view of the IT environment that in turn enables administrators to better manage the impact of infrastructure changes.

"Business Service Management is an integral part of Novell’s data center strategy," said Joe Wagner, senior vice president and general manager of Systems and Resource Management at Novell. "By integrating this newly acquired technology with our market-leading virtualization and workload management solutions, Novell can offer its customers a more open and cost-effective means of managing and measuring their mission-critical services and applications. Going forward, Novell has committed the necessary resources to ensure our leadership in the BSM marketplace."

When compared to competitive offerings, Novell BSM solutions offer a more comprehensive, dynamic and adaptable service model, unmatched vendor-neutral heterogeneous integration and state-of-the-art visualization. Novell BSM solutions integrate and correlate existing IT management into a single Web 2.0-based dashboard, improving the availability of revenue generating services and reducing downtime by between 50 and 60 percent. Built-in intelligence automates impact and root-cause analysis to improve staff productivity by as much as 33 percent and reduce operational costs by up to 30 percent.

As part of its BSM solution portfolio, Novell is offering five integrated, yet modular products:

  • Novell Business Service Manager -- for real-time application and service impact monitoring
  • Novell myCMDB™ -- a complete federated configuration management database (CMDB) solution for comprehensive IT infrastructure configuration modeling and analysis
  • Novell Business Experience Manager -- a cost-effective application performance monitoring solution
  • Novell Business Service Level Manager -- for real-time service level agreement management
  • Novell myMO Executive Dashboard -- for easy and intuitive role-based visualization

Novell Business Service Management will be integrated with PlateSpin® Workload Management products and SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server from Novell to deliver a complete integrated suite of data center solutions for the modern data center. More information on this vision and roadmap will be announced later this year.
