Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced new network management features in its ZENworks® for Servers 2 product that will simplify the maintenance and enhancement of NetWare® services, saving administration time and improving the end-user experience. Previously able to simply distribute NetWare support packs, ZENworks for Servers will now distribute and install support packs on servers efficiently and automatically. This capability available only from Novell will mean dramatic time and cost savings for most customers.

"We expect this to shorten our rollout of support packs by 96 percent," said Bruce McLeod, system architect for the California Highway Patrol. "We currently spend a minimum of an hour per server preparing for and installing a support pack on our 200 NetWare servers. We expect ZENworks for Servers to cut that down to a total of eight hours for the entire environment. This will free our network administrators to perform more important, less mundane tasks. And this time savings is on top of the value that ZENworks for Servers has already delivered."

The ZENworks for Servers support pack installation feature supports NetWare 4.11 and higher. When combined with ZENworks for Desktops 3, ZENworks for Servers gives customers a policy-based management solution for their entire network that can literally save millions of dollars. Administrators can automate software packages or desktop images, deploy them once on a single server, and let ZENworks for Servers' Tiered Electronic Distribution (TED) deliver the content to NetWare, NT and Windows* 2000 servers and desktops throughout the organization.

According to Gartner analyst Neil MacDonald, NetWare customers have a need for automated support pack distribution and installation. "Customers automating this process will save the time, money and labor previously dedicated to the time-consuming, but necessary, function of keeping their server operating system current. In addition, customers using automated support pack installation will find it easier to maintain support pack parity across all of the servers in their organization and current with the manufacturer's recommendations, both of which improve supportability," MacDonald said.

"The real value of this ZENworks for Servers capability can be measured in two ways," said Brad Anderson, ZENworks business unit manager for Novell. "First, it simplifies and accelerates the deployment of NetWare support packs saving organizations time and money. Second, it enables organizations to install the support packs much quicker, allowing them to take advantage of the support pack benefits sooner."

ZENworks for Servers supports Novell's one Net vision, allowing companies to distribute data or software to servers across the Net, whether inside or outside the company firewall. This capability allows businesses to address the market demand for sharing information dynamically with customers, partners and suppliers. ZENworks for Servers solves the problem of server management on large networks and across the Net by offering customers several key benefits such as centralized directory-enabled management, business-to-business data sharing, integration with ZENworks for Desktops, full management console and policy-enabled NetWare servers. ZENworks accounted for well over half of the more than $120 million of management software sold by Novell in its fiscal 2000. It was one of the fastest growing of Novell's new Net services products, up more than 50 percent year-over-year.
