Novell Positioned as a 'Leader' in Analyst Firm's Metadirectory Magic Quadrant

Metadirectories, such as Novell DirXML, are an important building block in secure identity management solutions

26 August 2002

Novell is the first, and thus far only, company to enter the Leader Quadrant of Gartner, Inc.'s Metadirectory Services Magic Quadrant*. Metadirectory services, such as Novell® DirXML®, are an important building block in secure identity management solutions, because they integrate the user information in multiple directories, databases and applications.

The Gartner report, "Metadirectory Service Market Magic Quadrant" by John Enck, cites a steady rise of interest in metadirectory products because of the rise of complexity in enterprise networks. Most enterprises, the report states, are struggling to maintain multiple directories as they try to balance Web applications, terminal/host resources and traditional business-critical applications, such as e-mail and ERP. In light of these challenges, the Metadirectory Service Magic Quadrant evaluates the key metadirectory vendors and rates them as Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries or Niche Players.

According to the report, Novell is the first vendor to enter the Leader Quadrant. Leaders are vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

By integrating user information among a wide range of systems - directories, databases, HR applications, e-mail, network operating systems and many others - metadirectories help facilitate both provisioning products and broader secure identity management solutions. These solutions address a key business problem CIOs face today: how to deliver real-time, role-based resources to a distributed workforce, partners and customers, while keeping systems and data safe.

"Novell's Leader Quadrant position in the metadirectory market is yet another indicator that no other vendor can compare with the strength and scope of Novell's secure identity management solutions," said Chris Stone, Novell's vice chairman - Office of the CEO. "Networks today are too complex, with identity information stored in silos across the enterprise. That complexity creates security vulnerabilities and makes it difficult to securely extend resources to people based on who they are. Secure identity management cuts to the heart of these challenges to increase security, reduce the cost of administration, and help build productive relationships with employees, customers and partners."

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner, Inc.'s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the "Leaders" quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
