14 April 2003

Novell today announced the immediate availability of Novell® Resource Management, a services and technology solution powered by Novell ZENworks®, the complete and integrated resource management tool set that automates IT management processes throughout the lifecycle of desktops, laptops, servers and handhelds. A Novell Nterprise™ solution, ZENworks is the technology foundation for Novell Resource Management, allowing customers to cost-effectively consolidate management of IT resources - regardless of platform - using directory-based identities and policies.

The new version of Novell ZENworks is a fully integrated package that includes Novell iFolder® for data management and Desktop DNA from Miramar Systems for personality migration, along with the proven ZENworks for Desktops for desktop management, ZENworks for Servers for server management and ZENworks for Handhelds for handheld management. Novell ZENworks also features Web self-service capabilities to automate the provisioning of new services to users inside and outside the organization.

"IT resources are too expensive and complex to deploy and manage without a comprehensive resource management solution," said Chris Stone, Novell vice chairman - Office of the CEO. "The Novell Resource Management solution is based on our award-winning ZENworks technology along with expertise and proven best practices to help customers consolidate management of their networks while realizing lower costs and higher efficiency - faster and with less risk. Novell Resource Management is another example of Novell's commitment to open systems with standards-based technology that can manage diverse IT environments now and in the future."

Novell Resource Management
Novell Resource Management offers consulting, implementation and support services with Novell ZENworks to automate IT processes and optimize the use of IT assets to help customers get more value out of existing investments. The solution can include rapid analysis and advanced capabilities for automating software usage tracking, maintaining resource integrity and OS migration. In addition, it makes extended IT services manageable, such as accommodating the changing needs and multiple devices of the growing mobile workforce, and it leverages Novell's IT resource-planning expertise and usage-measurement capabilities to help set business priorities for customers' IT resources.

Ronni Colville, research director for Gartner, said, "Policy-based configuration management that spans diverse devices and platforms in today's IT environments will be essential for enterprises to meet their short-term cost-reduction goals while laying a strategic foundation for future support requirements. Companies that offer these cross-platform configuration-management capabilities help enterprises realize IT efficiencies from the resources they have at their disposal."

Novell ZENworks
Novell ZENworks now features desktop, server, handheld and data-management components, as well as new personality migration and Web self-service capabilities, in a single, integrated package. New Novell ZENworks capabilities include:

  • Personality migration via Miramar Systems' patented Desktop DNA, letting customers move or restore complete desktop work environments, including user bookmarks, personal settings and application settings, to reduce disruptions to productivity.
  • Data management with Novell iFolder to automate the management and protection of user data across multiple devices and changing work environments.
  • Web self-service using Novell exteNd Director™ to enable users to select needed resources and have them immediately delivered and running without human intervention, along with detailed measurement of application and service usage by individuals and groups.
  • Expanded mobile management that provides auto lock-out and self-destruct capabilities along with support for RIM BlackBerry* devices, in addition to Palm OS*, Windows CE and Pocket PC devices.

Dustin Sanders, director of Networking Services at Packaging Corporation of America, said, "Novell ZENworks is our bread and butter. Everything we do revolves around it. Without ZENworks, we would put off upgrading our software because it would be too difficult to manage, and we wouldn't be able to keep pace with the latest technology. With ZENworks, upgrades are no big deal. Everyone at the company is overwhelmingly pleased with our Novell solutions. We have an increased IT efficiency that helps us keep costs under control - one of the major reasons why we haven't had to increase our IT budget in the past four years."
