Application Analysis Server References and Reports

Visual COBOL enables you to get a list of the direct references and various application wide reports through integration with Micro Focus Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer.

You use the Micro Focus Application Server node in Server Explorer to connect to an Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer repository.

Requirements

In order to get reports from the Application Analysis Server, you need the following:

  • You need access to either Micro Focus Enterprise Analyzer or Micro Focus COBOL Analyzer. These products are different from Visual COBOL. You need to set their repositories and web clients separately from your IDE. For more information, refer to the Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer documentation.
  • The Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer repository should include all sources for your application.
  • In order to view the reports you need version 8.0 of either Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer. Getting direct references is available with version 7.0 of these Micro Focus products.

Overview of the functionality

The Application Analysis Server provides access to the Micro Focus Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer web client from which you can perform quick searches for repository objects, detailed code searches, diagrams, reports, and data item impact analysis and other features such as viewing and editing of business rules (separate license required).

Development efforts on mainframe and COBOL applications, such as bug fixing, modernization or simple maintenance, always involve a certain level of risk. That's why application intelligence helps reduce this risk and support the efficient development of these applications.

The enterprise-grade central repository that the Application Analysis Server links to is actually the Enterprise Analyzer or COBOL Analyzer repository.

The Application Analysis Server provides quick access from your IDE environment that usually contains only a small subset of the entire application to a centralized repository that holds information about the entire enterprise application estate.

The quick access allows the development team to be connected to this central repository and get access to application intelligence.

Currently, you can query the repository and get all the dependencies of an object from across the whole application and not just the files in your project.
