Novell, Inc. today announced the promotion of Stewart Nelson, senior vice president of marketing and product development, to chief operating officer.

This announcement expands Mr. Nelson's role at Novell ®, where he has held a variety of executive-level positions in management, product development, and marketing since his arrival in 1994.
"Stewart has already had a powerful impact on our business. He has been instrumental in setting, driving and delivering our product direction, and more recently, in effecting needed changes in marketing," stated Eric Schmidt. "His leadership is proven, and as COO I expect him to take the execution of Novell's business to new levels of timeliness and competitiveness. We're creating a strong organization focused on our objective of supporting one Net solutions that enable our customers to adapt and accelerate their transformation to ebusiness."

Reporting directly to Mr. Nelson are the operational leaders of product development, marketing, sales, and services. Steve L. Adams, recently promoted to senior vice president of worldwide marketing, is responsible for corporate positioning and programs and directs all corporate, field, and partner marketing activities. Dave Shirk, recently promoted to senior vice president of product management, drives product focus and direction for the company and is responsible for all product, packaging, and pricing strategies. Joining Mr. Adams and Mr. Shirk in reporting to Mr. Nelson, are Ron Heinz, senior vice president of worldwide sales; and Richard Nortz, senior vice president of services.
Stewart Nelson has more than 15 years of experience in the computer industry. Prior to joining Novell as part of the WordPerfect acquisition in 1994, he held positions at WordPerfect and IBM. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in computer science from Brigham Young University. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Encommerce
