Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced that the more than 13.5 million Palm Powered* handheld device users can now access Novell® GroupWise® through a Palm OS* web clipping application, providing integrated, real-time access to GroupWise 6 services. In addition, partner solutions from Pumatech and Syclo give users wired or wireless synchronization capabilities that deliver online and offline access to GroupWise e-mail, calendaring and task functions, helping users increase their productivity by collaborating with others and accessing their information anytime, anywhere. Novell GroupWise leads in deskless collaboration with the broadest support for wireless phones and devices, and it is the only enterprise-level integrated collaboration environment to provide support for Palm* web clipping software, giving Palm OS-based handheld users the information they need when they need it, simply and securely.

"Traditional knowledge workers are no longer tethered to their desks but can maintain and even increase productivity with access to their collaboration tools whenever and wherever they are," said Dave Stevenson, vice president of Novell's Collaboration Services group. "We estimate the deskless collaboration market is two to seven times larger than the existing desk-based collaboration market. With the Web/wireless-only licensing option we offer with GroupWise 6, organizations can use wireless-enabled Palm handhelds and other handheld devices to extend collaboration to deskless workers, helping to increase responsiveness to customers while raising productivity that increases profitability."

Palm Handheld Access and Synchronization with GroupWise 6

  • Direct access: Web clipping enables Palm handheld users to directly access their GroupWise accounts via a wireless connection. This lets users leverage all the powerful features of GroupWise, including messaging, calendaring, scheduling/busy search and task management.
  • Desktop synchronization: Pumatech's Intellisync* 4.0 allows GroupWise users to synchronize messages, addresses, calendars and tasks to their Palm Powered device from their desktop.
  • Wireless and desktop synchronization: As well as providing enterprise-level synchronization, Syclo's SIM* 4.0 lets GroupWise administrators manage device synchronization centrally while allowing users to synchronize from any desktop cradle or over wireless connections.

"GroupWise 6 is a widely used tool in enterprises and institutions of all types," said Gabriel Acosta-Lopez, Palm's senior director of platform development services. "With Palm's thrust into the enterprise, this is a must-have application for our users."

Novell GroupWise's comprehensive support for Palm OS-based devices combined with its support for other handheld devices - including WAP-enabled, RIM* and Windows* CE/Pocket PC devices - extends Novell's lead in the deskless collaboration market and makes GroupWise ideal for enterprises needing to provide collaboration services to mobile and deskless workers.
