Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, is tying together disparate networks - internal and external - into one Net for international electronic payments provider VeriFone. A division of Hewlett-Packard Company, VeriFone recently upgraded 20 servers in 16 cities around the world to Novell® NetWare® 5.1 from a beach house in Hawaii, demonstrating the simple and secure management capabilities of Novell Net services software. VeriFone completed the upgrade with the assistance of Novell Consulting, which also recently helped VeriFone deploy Novell ZENworks® for Desktops management services across the company, improving network reliability and reducing administrative costs.
VeriFone, the leading global provider of secure electronic payment solutions for financial institutions, merchants and consumers, has shipped more than 9 million electronic-payment systems to more than 100 countries. Because VeriFone depends on different operating systems and hardware configurations to manage its business, the security, value and cross-platform nature of Novell Net services software helps the company earn maximum return on its technology investment.
"Our NetWare upgrade was a given, considering its reliability and low cost of management, two strong selling points," said Mark Johnson, VeriFone project manager. "Doing the upgrade from the beach actually saved us money, because we had access to all of our resources and completed the project in a few days. Without Novell's expertise and remote management services, we probably would have had to do a site-by-site upgrade, requiring the team to travel to each site. It would have likely stretched this project out to 18 months compared to the few days it actually took and cost significantly more."
Using off-the-shelf wireless solutions, the upgrade team connected to VeriFone's corporate network through a virtual private network (VPN) over the Internet. The upgraded servers are located overseas in Taiwan, India, Germany, Italy, France and England, as well as domestically in Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, California and Hawaii.
Prior to the upgrade, the Novell Consulting team stepped through a number of planning and testing phases with VeriFone to ensure the ultimate success of the project. "Whether migrating to the latest version of NetWare, harnessing the power of Novell NDS® eDirectory , or deploying ZENworks for Desktops, Novell Consulting is driven by the needs of customers and partners," said Alex Salehi, worldwide vice president of Novell Professional Services. "VeriFone needed a solution that was fast, affordable and transparent to users and customers. The combination of Novell consulting services and Net services software gives them the power to change their business to meet ever-shifting market demands."
