Novell Listed in 'Leader' Quadrant in Analyst Firm's Desktop Software Distribution Magic Quadrant

23 April 2003

Novell has been listed in the Leader Quadrant of Gartner, Inc.'s Desktop Software Distribution Magic Quadrant* on the strength of Novell® ZENworks®. A Novell Nterprise™ solution, Novell ZENworks is a complete and integrated resource management tool set that reduces costs and increases efficiency by automating IT management processes throughout the lifecycle of desktops, laptops, servers and handhelds.

According to the Gartner report, "2003 Desktop Software Distribution Magic Quadrant" by Ronni Colville, software distribution continues to be "the most significant contributor to cost reduction of managing desktops" in an enterprise. In addition, "focused desktop software distribution vendors have included richer feature sets in their capabilities and will continue to broaden their support to include laptops, handhelds and Linux*."

The positioning of the software distribution vendors in Gartner's Desktop Software Distribution Magic Quadrant is based on several criteria that are continually evolving depending on new user requirements and new technology, as well as a vendor's vision and overall ability to execute. Vendors are rated as Leaders, Challengers, Visionaries or Niche Players. Gartner defines leaders as those that are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

"Novell's position in Gartner's Leader Quadrant reflects the ability of ZENworks to deliver comprehensive desktop management for heterogeneous environments, a requirement in today's world of mixed-technology enterprises," said Alan Nugent, chief technology officer for Novell. "Novell removes boundaries across networks and makes it easier for customers to administer their valuable IT resources through directory- and policy-based management."

Novell ZENworks is part of Novell Nterprise, a set of services that improve communication, simplify and automate network management, and allow workers to be productive regardless of location, device or platform. ZENworks supports Active Directory* in addition to Novell eDirectory™ and runs across platforms including Linux, Windows*, Solaris*, NetWare®, Palm OS*, Windows CE, Pocket PC and RIM BlackBerry*.

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner, Inc.'s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the "Leaders" quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
