Dot-coms Embrace Novell Caching to Ease Net Congestion, Improve Response Time

Datek Online and ZipLink Canada accelerate content delivery and reduce infrastructure costs with Novell Internet Caching Services

24 May 2000

Novell, Inc., a leading provider of Net services software, today announced Datek Online and ZipLink Canada have chosen the Novell Internet Caching System (ICS) to simplify and accelerate Net traffic. These leading companies are using ICS in a Net environment to increase the speed of content delivery and transaction processing on their Web sites, as well as reduce costs associated with buying and managing additional Web server hardware and software. Novell today is demonstrating ICS at the ISPCon trade show to the service provider market where it will participate in an hour-long panel discussion titled, "Caching to the Rescue." The panel, led by Peter Christy, research director with Jupiter Communications, will take place on Wednesday, May 24 at 1:30 p.m. EDT.

"The caching market is still in its infancy, but early adopters are clearly realizing huge gains both in infrastructure savings and in their ability to provide Web site visitors a much more satisfying overall Net experience," said Drew Major, chief scientist and co-developer of Novell's Internet Caching System. "We're beginning to see more and more dot-coms turning to caching as a way to enhance their offerings as Web users begin expecting, even demanding, speedier online transactions, Web searching, and content delivery."

Datek Online

Datek Online, located on the World Wide Web at www.datek.com, is the fourth largest online brokerage firm in the U.S. Since its launch in 1996, Datek Online has grown to more than 330,000 active customer accounts and currently executes more than 80,000 trades per day. Datek emphasizes the speed at which customers can execute trades and has a policy that if a marketable order takes longer than 60 seconds to execute, the trade is commission-free. For this reason, Datek introduced caching with ICS caching appliances.

Datek Online began using six of the Dell PowerApp.cache appliances six months ago and quickly saw the benefits to its customers. "The online trading market is highly competitive, so there has to be differentiation in the experience that we provide to attract and keep customers," said Rolando Garcia, vice president of networking, Datek Online. "Datek chose to use Dell's PowerApp.cache appliance to help accelerate our customers' access to www.Datek.com and conduct their online trading quickly and reliably. Our entire business is based on the Internet and Dell's PowerApp.cache and Novell ICS help us conduct that business faster than ever."

ZipLink Canada

ZipLink Canada, formerly Interhop, is the largest national Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Canada and provides bandwidth and services to more than 50 ISP franchises. ZipLink Canada's business model is to offer franchisees a full range of Internet services to their local customers without investing heavily in infrastructure and without maintaining a large technical staff.

To provide the benefits of increased bandwidth and decreased network traffic to its ISPs, ZipLink Canada began using the Novell Internet Caching System (ICS) combined with Dell's caching appliance and immediately realized 30 percent performance improvement for their customers' Internet access. "Adding the caching solution from Dell and Novell really helped to improve bandwidth utilization," said David Granic, ZipLink Canada's president and chief operating officer. "By using ICS, we were able to avoid the additional cost of adding T-1 lines in order to increase our Internet bandwidth demands, saving us $3,000 - 4,000 dollars a month. The appliance was easy to install, configure and manage and plugged easily into our network."
