Novell Brings Film Festivals to Life on the Web

Novell Caching Technology Powered by Dell Used to Stream Sundance, Slamdance Movie Trailers on the Internet

2 February 2000

At the home of the Sundance, Slamdance and other independent film festivals, Novell, Inc. today revealed that its cutting edge Internet caching technology is delivering "streamed" short movies and movie trailers over the Web for the general public. Novell ICS Powered by Dell, an Internet caching appliance, is using Novell Internet Caching System technology that supports QuickTime multimedia streaming on the Internet to bring the films from the various festivals to a wider audience. In conjunction with ShowBIZ Data, the premiere source for entertainment information on the Web, Novell is enabling viewers worldwide the fastest access to Web coverage of the film festivals.

"ShowBIZ Data prides itself on being the premiere source for entertainment information on the Web by providing our users fast access to the largest body of entertainment information available," said Neil Roberts, senior vice president of business development and marketing for ShowBIZ Data. "Novell's caching technology enables us to provide fast access to our web coverage of Sundance and other independent Film Festivals. Our readers now get their reviews, entertainment news and other information much faster than before."

Novell caching technology is being used to make independent films and reviews available for viewing at www.slamdance.com. In a unique twist, films being viewed on the Slamdance Web site are being judged by the public rather than being screened and judged by appointed film critics. Called Anarchy Online, Slamdance is taking the traditional notion of a film festival and extending it to the Internet.

"Slamdance is trying to provide as much exposure for as many first-time filmmakers as possible," said Peter Baxter, co-founder and executive director of Slamdance. "In a world where first impressions mean everything, Novell's caching technology enables us to deliver high quality independent films to the broadest viewing audience - users of the Web."

Novell ICS Powered by Dell is an Internet caching appliance that provides the high speed and throughput needed for delivering dependable, high quality Internet multimedia content such as films, video news footage, live and on-demand programming and internal training videos. Content publishers, ISPs and corporations can all powerfully enhance the Internet experience of their customers and users by implementing Novell Internet Caching System technology with support for QuickTime streams. Support for QuickTime and other multimedia stream caching will be included in a future release of the Novell Internet Caching System.

"As clearly demonstrated by Slamdance and ShowBIZ Data, the potential of providing multimedia and rich content on the Internet is tremendous," said Dave Shirk, vice president of product management and product marketing, Novell. "The explosion of Web content places an incredible burden on network bandwidth and Web server performance that can be solved by caching appliances."
