Novell's NDS eDirectory Powers Xircom Business to Business Web site, Opens Up New E-commerce Opportunities

NDS eDirectory Provides Personalized E-commerce Experience for Xircom partners

22 March 2000

Novell, Inc. today announced that Xircom, Inc., creator of the mobile networking market, has successfully deployed Novell's NDS eDirectory, enabling them to secure and accelerate their business to business e-commerce initiatives. NDS eDirectory enables Xircom to manage the identities of the resellers and partners in its global partner network, grant access privileges to tailored content and services, improve the ability to share product information and communicate pricing and co-marketing opportunities.

The reliability and flexibility of Novell's industry-leading NDS eDirectory allows Xircom to establish a single global repository of both internal and external identity and profile information, simplifying management and maintenance of sensitive partner data. With NDS eDirectory, Xircom is able to consolidate five separate and redundant databases into a single, secure, and centrally located directory. This has accelerated the Web experience of their partners, and reduced costs through simplified administration.

"We want our partners to log-on and interact with the Xircom e-business site seamlessly, based on who they are and what they need," said Patrick Piccininno, Xircom vice president and CIO. "NDS eDirectory has enabled us to rapidly enhance our e-business efforts by easily and successfully managing our partner profiles and relationships. eDirectory has moved us from the investigation and planning stage of our e-commerce strategy to the charting and evaluation phase of its success," added Piccininno.

"Xircom demonstrates that companies committed to e-business are using the power of directory-based solutions to provide a more personalized and productive Web experience," said Dave Shirk, Novell's senior vice president for product management. "At prominent Web destinations like Xircom, NDS eDirectory provides the foundation for more trusted business relationships that are essential to brand loyalty and business growth in the new Net economy."

Novell Consulting Accelerates Xircom Deployment
To accelerate Xircom's deployment of eDirectory, Novell Consulting collaborated with KPMG Consulting's e.Integration Group to design an e-business solution based on NDS eDirectory that integrates Netegrity's Net portal management products SiteMinder and Vignette. NDS eDirectory provides a centralized identity foundation that enhances the performance and scalability of third-party applications for the Xircom e-business site. Novell supplies a fast, scalable solution that takes advantage of Internet standards like Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and the fault tolerance that eDirectory provides. Novell Consulting specializes in the rapid deployment of identity-based directory solutions that reduce management costs and speed the integration of diverse systems including e-businesses such as portals, service providers, media outlets and online retailers.

Xircom Uses Novell's Internet Commercial Service Provider Agreement to License eDirectory
Xircom is the first US-based company to take advantage of the Novell Internet Commercial Service Provider (ICSP) agreement to license the use of eDirectory. The ICSP agreement allows Xircom the flexibility to pay for the use of the directory on a per user per month basis.

"This new licensing agreement from Novell allows companies like Xircom the flexibility and pricing to extend services to their customers outside the firewall," said Alex Nameth, director of the Internet Business Solutions group at Novell.
