Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, is working closely with its partners to bring medium and small sized businesses, a market of more than 5.8 million companies** in the U.S. alone, into the eBusiness world quickly, cost effectively, and securely. Reflecting Novell's change to a Net services software provider, channel partners have re-shaped business models and gained expertise to meet customer demand for Novell® Net services software and solutions to accelerate eBusiness transformations.

"The midmarket presents some interesting opportunities," states Albert Pang, analyst for International Data Corporation. "The tens of millions of midmarket companies around the world are in the throes of adapting themselves to eCommerce." IntraSource, RDA Enterprises, and ZAG Technical Services are representative of the type of Novell partners expected to lead growth by regional IT service and solution providers in delivering secure, 'Net ready' solutions to customers. Central Bank of Lexington, Kentucky; American Continental Properties of New York City, New York; and Birkenstock USA of Novato, California small and medium sized businesses whose limited IT resources demand eBusiness solutions that just work. They have found that Novell Net services, delivered by a local channel partner, provide a compelling option.

"Novell's channel partners are seeing the value of Novell's Net services software in solving the problems faced by their small and medium sized customers," said Rich Nortz, senior vice president of worldwide sales for Novell. "As they ramp up their level of expertise in Novell based solutions, these partners are finding great opportunities with customers who need around the clock reliability, speed, scalability and security for their businesses on the Net."

Central Bank
As a leading regional Kentucky-based financial institution, Central Bank needed greater control of user desktop systems and improved efficiency in providing help desk support to a growing number of users. In addition, they faced rising administrative demands, limited staff, and the need to enable mobile user access without compromising security for sensitive information. With the help of network systems integrator IntraSource the customer deployed ZENworks® for Desktops that leveraged their existing Novell NDS® eDirectory and NetWare. Novell's GroupWise® collaboration suite and BorderManager® were also deployed to leverage Novell eDirectory for messaging and Internet security.

"The Novell solution allowed us to greatly streamline application distribution and manage our infrastructure with limited staff through eDirectory and IntraSource's integration expertise," said Anne Carter, executive vice president at Central Bank. "Our improved help desk has given us both more uptime, and significant cost savings."

"As we analyzed Central Bank's challenges, the Novell-based solution was clearly the right choice for the customer," stated David Reedy, president for IntraSource, a provider of comprehensive network consulting, implementation and technical engineering services as well as recent Novell Services Excellence Award winner. "With eDirectory they now have a central point for simplified management of the network - from user accounts, email, and desktop management to Internet access controls."

American Continental Properties
With a diverse array of commercial and residential properties in Europe and North America, American Continental Properties (ACP) needed to connect multiple locations with a secure, cross-platform system to enhance collaboration and provide mainframe access to all employees over the Internet. With limited internal expertise, ACP turned to RDA Enterprises headquartered in Manhattan. Drawing on its extensive understanding of Novell Net services software, RDA recommended a one Net solution using NetWare®, BorderManager, ZENworks for Desktops, and GroupWise in a pure Internet Protocol (IP) environment.

"The Novell-based solution installed by RDA gives us a fully operational network without having to hire an IT support person," said Matthew Axelrod - controller for American Continental Properties. "The network virtually runs itself; data back-ups and virus protection updates are automatic. And the GroupWise e-mail system is great. We no longer have formatting problems downloading file attachments from our affiliates, partners and clients in Europe and they load into programs with a simple mouse click. Communication within the company has probably doubled, as we no longer have lengthy phone mails and faxes. Aside from a few problems getting the DSL up, the whole process was painless primarily because of Novell and RDA."

"With ZENworks, the network almost manages itself," stated Robert Diaz, president of RDA Enterprises. "ACP has a great, secure network which is transparent to the users. They simply work, hassle free, therefore making our service work with them very easy. ACP is now concentrating on their business instead of their network."

Birkenstock
Birkenstock USA, the U.S. distributor for Birkenstock comfort footwear, confronted the challenge of a growing mobile workforce with increasing demands for secure cross-platform information access and collaboration. They turned to ZAG Technical Services, a full-service IT solutions provider to show them how to connect AS400* and Windows NT* systems in an easy-to-manage, secure and stable network infrastructure allowing for remote access over the Internet by their sales force. Leveraging eDirectory as a single source of administration ZAG's solution included ZENworks for Desktops, GroupWise, and NetWare. The result has been reduced administrative complexity, increased systems stability, and better user access for remote workers.

"Novell was a perfect fit for Birkenstock because it is so stable and easy to administer. We can simply configure it and leave it alone," stated Austin Ahern, president of ZAG Technical Services. "If we do our job, the customer doesn't know that there are so many components to network. They point, click and things work. We leverage Novell products to help us achieve that."

Novell's Net services software, combined with the on-the-ground expertise and local support of Novell's channel partners, offers a compelling option for small and medium sized businesses who want to move their businesses to the Net without the security, reliability, and cost nightmares such a move can entail.
