Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net business solutions, today announced the availability of Novell® NetMail™ 3.1, Novell's cross-platform Internet messaging solution that now operates on Windows NT*/2000. NetMail, formerly named Novell Internet Messaging System™ (NIMS™), is a standards-based messaging solution that provides e-mail, calendaring and schedule sharing across the Internet. NetMail 3.1 supports hundreds of thousands of users on a single server, giving enterprise customers a highly scalable messaging infrastructure at a very low cost. NetMail allows customers to leverage the power of the Internet along with their existing network investment to more efficiently communicate and do business.

"E-mail and calendaring are necessities in today's business world, and organizations of all sizes need low-cost, standards-based messaging solutions to effectively compete," said Dave Stevenson, vice president and general manager of Novell's Messaging and Business Solutions Group. "NetMail provides the functionality and features customers want and expect but without the cost and complexity inherent in other messaging systems. Now with support for Windows, NetMail 3.1 provides an easy, low-cost alternative to customers who are unhappy with the complexity of running Microsoft* Exchange. Novell's ability to tie together existing networks and technology into one Net brings tremendous value and return to our customers and their users."

Novell NetMail 3.1 operates on all leading server platforms, now supporting Windows NT/2000 along with Solaris*, Linux* and Novell NetWare®. In addition, NetMail lets users synchronize e-mail, calendar and address book data to their Palm OS* and Pocket PC PDA devices from any client workstation on their network. One of the first e-mail systems to deliver calendaring and schedule sharing across the Internet, NetMail leverages the strength of Novell eDirectory™ to deliver a highly scalable messaging infrastructure at a very low cost. NetMail also supports multiple clients such as Outlook*, Eudora*, Novell GroupWise® and Netscape Mail*.

Novell NetMail helps organizations open up communications between traditional desktop-using employees and their deskless co-workers through its tight interface with corporate collaboration systems such as GroupWise, Exchange and Lotus Notes*. Southwest Airlines uses Novell NetMail to facilitate communication among its 11,000 pilots and flight attendants as well as its 7,500 corporate employees who use GroupWise. Eric Jorgensen, manager, Intel Engineering at Southwest Airlines, said, "NetMail provides the most cost-effective, scalable and functional solution for extending Web and wireless e-mail access to our deskless workforce. For our administrators, NetMail offers a simple management interface and incredible user capacity. For our users, they simply have access to their e-mail wherever and whenever they need it."

Novell NetMail scales into the hundreds of thousands of users for a very low cost, as recently shown in testing by the Standard Performance Evaluation Corp. (SPEC). NetMail 3.1 - running on IBM* X Series 342 hardware - supported 210,000 users on a single server. NetMail achieved this performance using a single processor. Other companies have approached similar numbers only by using multiple processors on proprietary hardware and software rather than standard systems owned by most customers. NetMail 3.1 delivers unmatched value and functionality to organizations looking to deploy flexible, low-cost, scalable messaging systems.
