Novell Ships GroupWise 6.5 - the Most Trusted, Secure Messaging Platform Available

Novell GroupWise 6.5 provides enhanced interface, security, access, contact management, integration and cost savings to benefit end-users, administrators and developer partners Customers and analysts cite confidence in the present and future of GroupWise

26 March 2003

An enhanced interface for users, improved integration tools for third-party developers, the most secure messaging platform in the industry, and stability that routinely has customers needing only one IT administrator for 10,000 or more users are all part of Novell® GroupWise® 6.5, which Novell today announced is now available worldwide.

A Novell Nterprise™ solution, GroupWise 6.5 is the latest version of Novell's e-mail, calendaring, contact and document management, and workflow services solution that works across network operating systems including Novell NetWare® and Windows* NT*/2000. GroupWise caters to the way customers really work, giving users access to their information when and where they need it through the client or Web browser via desktop and laptop computers, wireless telephones, PDAs and RIM* devices. Next month, GroupWise Messenger will be added to GroupWise 6.5, allowing customers to secure their instant messaging (IM) communications within their enterprise.

"We have just commenced the implementation of GroupWise 6.5 across our global estate of hotels and health clubs and the initial feedback about the product's enhanced functionality and Novell's professional services support is encouraging," said Jim Farrow, vice president of IT for Hilton International. "We expect GroupWise 6.5 to offer us benefits in productivity, security and ease of use that will be appreciated by all Hilton International staff."

Roger Leone, vice president of Information Services Technology for Wyeth, said, "GroupWise has been Wyeth's global e-mail standard for over six years. We are now participating in Novell's Early Adopter program to upgrade to the latest version, GroupWise 6.5. This program provides our users new features that will greatly enhance their productivity and gives us the opportunity to influence future GroupWise enhancements. GroupWise continues to be a cost-effective solution for our diverse workforce of 40,000 users worldwide."

With a focus on open standards and new application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers, Novell is enabling independent-developer access to GroupWise data stores that is driving additional benefits to customers through partner offerings that support GroupWise. In addition, the more-than 34 million current GroupWise users along with new customers can take advantage of lower total cost of ownership, including lower initial costs combined with lower administration costs, advantages not available from products like Exchange and Notes.

Robert Mahowald, research manager at IDC, said, "Novell charges per user for GroupWise, rather than per server or per access device, so users can access their mailboxes from multiple devices without requiring additional licenses. With the proliferation of PDAs and other collaboration devices besides the traditional desktop, per-user licensing is particularly valuable since a single user may be accessing e-mail from three or four devices regularly. Novell also offers a clear benefit to customers with its ongoing competitive upgrade pricing, an advantage not offered by all collaboration vendors."

In addition, in its recently issued 1Q03 Novell Ratings Update, Gartner boosted its rating of Novell's messaging/collaboration initiative from "promising" to "positive."**
