Expanding on its mission to deliver Net services software, Novell, Inc. today announced Novell Content Exchange, a new Web content acceleration service for Web content publishers. Novell Content Exchange dynamically prepares Web content for distribution to Web users over content delivery networks. Novell Content Exchange addresses the bottleneck at the "first foot" of the Internet, by accelerating the delivery of Internet content, such as page views, between the origin Web server and the Internet backbone. For Web users, a faster delivery of requested pages directly translates to improved response times. For content publishers, accelerated delivery of Web content translates to enhanced customer loyalty, a greater number of delivered page views and higher potential revenue as customers remain longer on Web sites.

GlobalCenter, a leading Internet services company offering complex Web hosting, is the first such provider to sign an agreement for Novell Content Exchange. "Novell impressed us with the Web acceleration power of Content Exchange," said Laurie Priddy, co-Chief Operating Officer of GlobalCenter. "Novell Content Exchange provides even faster delivery of Web pages, which equates to dramatic increases in the amount of traffic a site can support for greater customer loyalty and an improved overall Web experience. Novell Content Exchange will enable us to accelerate the deployment of our customers' content."

Tests conducted by Novell have achieved up to a ten-fold acceleration of Web page delivery through the Novell Content Exchange. Novell plans that the first commercial version of Novell Content Exchange will be available to Web content publishers later this fall. The Net service will be sold by Web hosting companies to their customers via a subscription model based on monthly consumption.

Accelerate Adoption of Content Delivery Networks

While the content delivery network market is estimated by the Internet Research Group to grow to $6 billion by 2004, one of the inhibitors to that market's growth has been the translation process of preparing Web sites to run over content delivery networks. Novell Content Exchange complements content delivery network infrastructures by intelligently and dynamically preparing Web content for distribution over content delivery networks, such as Akamai's Freeflow*, Digital Island's Footprint* and Mirror-Image's instaContent*. Adding Web server acceleration and dynamic preparation of Web content allows Internet content publishers and Web-site operators to more quickly and easily take advantage of content delivery network services to optimize their customers' Web experience, while reducing the amount of Web resources currently required to improve performance and scalability.

"Novell's Content Exchange can help accelerate the adoption of content delivery services," says Greg Howard, principal analyst of the HTRC Group, LLC. "By providing seamless integration with partnered content delivery networks, content publishers could benefit from using multiple content delivery network provider services without significant integration headaches. Content Exchange is positioning Novell and it's partners towards a significant market opportunity."

"Novell Content Exchange combines the leading content distribution networks with an explosive acceleration service," said Simon Khalaf, vice president and general manager, Net Content Services Group, Novell. "In the race for Internet customers, Web content publishers must get off to a quick start and utilize the best methods available to win new business. Novell Content Exchange helps to develop an exciting new channel of distribution for Novell Net services via the Web. "

Accelerates the "First Foot"

Novell Content Exchange helps companies attract and retain new customers as well as manage Web growth by adding new capabilities to the "first foot" of the Internet. The first foot of the Internet is the short distance between an origin Web server and the Internet backbone connection. Novell Content Exchange seamlessly provides massive scalability and significant performance gains for Web servers by eliminating many Web site bottlenecks.

Innovative Technology and Proven Service

Novell Content Exchange leverages proven technology, including the protocol engine and caching technology used in the Novell Internet Caching System (ICS). The service has been tested at Novell for their JustOn.com Net-based file sharing service. During testing, Novell Content Exchange increased the Web content output speed by an order of magnitude, sped content access for end-users of the file sharing service, and increased the number of page views served while decreasing the average cost per page view.
