  • Unveils Novell Single Sign-on Bundle and NDS Authentication Services
  • Provides Industry's Broadest Support of Applications and Operating Systems
  • Reduces Network Support Costs; Improves Employee Productivity; Enhances Information Access

Novell, Inc., a leading provider of Net services software, unveiled today two new single sign-on applications, Novell Single Sign-on Bundle and NDS Authentication Services 3.0. These new single sign-on applications are designed to reduce network support costs, enhance employee productivity and improve security across a company's full range of business applications. Together, these security products provide the industry's broadest support of applications and operating systems, including Windows NT* and 2000*, NetWare, OS/390*, Solaris*, HP-UX*, AIX*, Linux*, FreeBSD*, Radius*, Internet Information Server*, and many other applications.

A combination of Novell Single Sign-on 2.0 and v-GO*, Passlogix's single sign-on technology, the Novell Single Sign-on Bundle (NSSO Bundle) replaces hard-to-remember IDs and passwords with a single NDS password. With only one password to remember, users are less likely to need help desk assistance, reducing the number one help-desk cost. NSSO Bundle works out-of-the-box to extend the benefits of single sign-on to virtually every Windows, Web and host-based application all without requiring any additional programming. NDS Authentication Services 3.0 (NDSAS) is complementary software that goes beyond NetWare and Windows to extend authentication across multiple platforms and legacy applications, either in conjunction with or independently of NSSO Bundle. Both products leverage the reliability and security of NDS eDirectory, helping organizations transform their network to securely conduct eBusiness in the emerging one Net economy.

"IPALCO has a large number of applications, including several that reside on the mainframe," said Tom Davis, senior security director for Indianapolis Power and Light Company (IPALCO). "The Novell Single Sign-on Bundle was the only solution that extended the benefits of single sign-on to all our sign-on needs."

Joining v-GO Intelligence with the Flexibility, Security and Reliability of NDS

The NSSO Bundle includes v-GO single sign-on technology from Passlogix, combining the industry leading single sign-on solution with the reliability, security and scalability of eDirectory. The NSSO Bundle offers roaming capabilities, auto-detection of new applications and Web sites, and timeout or manual lock of keyboard features required to support road warriors, telecommuters, and users who share a computer. Furthermore, v-GO's unique client-side intelligence detects and responds to logon requests on behalf of the user and provides the correct user ID and password. The same process detects password change requests and automatically generates secure passwords.

With NSSO Bundle, all users IDs and passwords are stored in a secure area of the directory using a patented Novell technology called the SecretStore. SecretStore makes passwords an extension of the employee's user profile, so the benefits of single sign-on are available to employees from any workstation on the network. Administrators will enjoy the extensive user management capabilities in eDirectory and ConsoleOne, while the CIO can rest easy knowing that their company is leveraging the industry's most proven, scalable, and secure directory.

"The Novell Single Sign-on Bundle will deliver the first cost-effective solution to the age-old challenge of single sign-on," explains Marc Boroditsky, CEO of Passlogix. "In the past, many have attempted and failed to deliver the Holy Grail of one password across all applications."

NDS Authentication Service Extends Single Password to Legacy Applications

NDSAS minimizes logon time and administrative complexity for companies with non NetWare or non Windows platforms, providing single, consistent passwords for login to legacy applications. With NDSAS, authentication requests from various operating systems and applications are redirected to eDirectory, and only the NDS password is used.

As a server-based solution, NDSAS allows any user from any workstation to have single password access, while making it nearly impossible for an intruder to access a password from the user's desktop. In addition, NDSAS extends NDS security features such as intruder detection, password rules, and user disablement to other platforms.

"NDS Authentication Service and NSSO Bundle solve one of the biggest challenges facing organizations today, that of securing and managing user access to corporate network resources," said Paul Smart, vice president and general manager, Net Directory business unit, Novell. "By delivering the industry's most complete single sign-on software, Novell helps organizations reduce network support costs, improve employee productivity, and enhance information access to all users whether employees, partners, or customers across their network."

Pricing and Availability

NSSO Bundle will be available on August 4, 2000, and NDS Authentication Services will be available by the end of August. The NSSO Bundle provides support for NDS on Windows NT and 2000, and is priced at $49 per user. Pricing for NDS-AS for UNIX*/Windows* 2000 Server is $26 per user. Pricing for NDS-AS for OS/390 varies.
