Novell, Inc. today announced that Thiokol Propulsion, the world leader in solid rocket motors for space, defense, and commercial applications, has chosen Novell's Net services software to transform its complex, fragmented network infrastructure into one Net. Thiokol picked Novell's Net services software because of its ability to both simplify the complexities of its existing, heterogeneous network environment and to extend the reach of that network to securely connect with employees, customers and supply-chain partners.

Thiokol uses Novell's NDS® eDirectory as the cornerstone of its Net infrastructure, enabling the company to extend customized services to individuals both within and outside the company, and to share sensitive data with customers and partners securely. Taking advantage of the proven reliability of Novell® NetWare®, Thiokol has deployed additional Net services software on top of eDirectory, including Novell GroupWise®, which dramatically enhances productivity by giving employees access to the data they need anytime, anywhere.

"Implementing Novell's Net services software like eDirectory, NetWare and GroupWise has provided us with secure integration, simplified network manageability, and highly productive collaboration," said Tom Murphy, manager of Systems Software Engineering at Thiokol. "These benefits allow us to give our employees, as well as our customers and partners, the resources, services and knowledge they need to act quickly and securely, which is essential in dealing with the kind of customers we serve."

Novell's Solution

Some of the key benefits Thiokol has gained from implementing Novell's Net services software include:

  • Reach employees, customers and partners eDirectory extends the reach of Thiokol's existing network infrastructure to employees, customers and supply-chain partners, providing complete control of, and access to, critical business processes.
  • Increase security Since Thiokol works intensively with organizations like NASA, the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy, the security of the network is paramount. Novell provides solid, powerful security infrastructure by incorporating features such as public key infrastructure, cryptography and authentication services into eDirectory.
  • Support all types of networks eDirectory is the integration point for all of Thiokol's enterprise, e-commerce and extranet networks, and it enables the company to manage Windows NT* and NetWare environments together.
  • Get the right information right away GroupWise gives Thiokol a knowledge platform with Internet-ready reliability, scalability, manageability and security. GroupWise enhances productivity by enabling employees to become more knowledgeable, more quickly about what's going on within the company.

"By implementing Novell's Net services software, Thiokol Propulsion is able to manage a variety of networks working together as one Net one very secure Net to better reach employees, customers and partners," said Steve Adams, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Novell. "The solution implemented at Thiokol is an excellent example of the power of Novell's eDirectory as the foundation for a solid, secure Net infrastructure."
