Novell, Inc.®, a leader in eBusiness solutions and Net services software, today made public details of its largest European eGovernment project; a directory solution for the Direction Générale des Impôts (DGI), the French Tax Authority, that will be used by 35 million French taxpayers.

The deal sees Novell eDirectory™, iChain™ and DirXML™ Net services software create the underlying infrastructure for all the DGI's Internet-enabled applications.
"Novell's directory solution will play a key part in developing new services and the integration of internal systems across the DGI," explains Bernard Gueux, chief information officer of the DGI. "The decision to use Novell's directory solution was based on our need for a product that met industry standards, was platform independent and reliable in supporting large volumes of data."
The DGI's solution will serve three different groups of users; its own employees, partner organisations and tax paying individuals and businesses. Taxpayers will be able to file their tax returns and review their tax details.

Novell's eDirectory, iChain and DirXML provide the DGI online tax system with a powerful security solution that allows third-party security and surveillance applications to use the directory as a single identification mechanism. With users - and their access rights - identified uniquely, controlled access is granted to different parts of the system based on an individual's requirements. This allows all users - from employees to taxpayers - to be centrally managed; saving set-up and maintenance costs, improving customer service and increasing accuracy.
The DGI is the latest in a long and distinguished line of government departments that are turning to Novell for help with their eGovernment initiatives including New York City Department of Health, City of The Hague, State of Michigan and the UK Ministry of Defence.
About Direction Generale Impôts
DGI is a division of the Ministry of Finance (MEFI) that outlines personal and corporation tax strategy throughout France. The DGI's role within the ministry is to assess individual and business tax requirements and ensure these groups pay the correct amount of money, at the correct time. Currently taxpayers in France declare and pay their taxes in the traditional fashion by filling out tax return forms and sending the information through the post. Once fully operational, 35 million nodes will have access to the tax applications available, allowing taxpayers to declare and pay their taxes online.
