  • Novell OnDemand Services 1.5 delivers applications and content efficiently across all types of networks
  • New technology targeted at enterprise and service provider markets
  • Combined with ZENworks for Desktops provides organizations a single interface to manage desktops, laptops, and thin-client servers

Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today introduced Novell® OnDemand Services 1.5 - new technology to help enterprises and service providers provision applications and other digital content securely and efficiently to their employees, business partners and customers across the Net. The new version of Novell OnDemand Services integrates thin-client technology from Novetrix, acquired by Novell today, into Novell NDS® eDirectory allowing customers to seamlessly utilize Web and Windows-based applications and other content across multiple independent networks, with only a browser required as the user interface. As a result, customers are able to simplify the management of network resources, secure availability and quality of service, and accelerate the deployment of new applications throughout the Net. (Please see release titled, Novell Acquires Novetrix.)

Through Novell OnDemand Services, service providers will have the ability to generate new revenue streams by providing value-added services to their subscribers. Enterprise customers benefit from centralized management, reduced network costs, and increased productivity as mobile users have access to corporate applications from anywhere they connect to the Net. Novell OnDemand Services 1.5 is in Beta release with general availability scheduled for April.

Founded in 1871, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics is one of the oldest and most successful logistics providers offering a range of transportation services including traditional haulage by truck, air and sea freight, as well as extensive courier services. Chip DiComo, network manager at Hellmann had this to say, "Novell OnDemand Services will allow us to deliver services not just to our employees, but to our strategic partners as well. This will make us more competitive globally."

The market for software provisioning to users over the Net is predicted to reach $1.5 Billion over the next three years according to industry research firm International Data Corporation. This is being driven by the increasing cost of technical implementation, and the shortage of trained IT professionals. Companies are increasingly embracing server-based application provisioning to employees, customers, and partners either as an in-house service, or through an ASP or other service providers.

Novell Net Services Offers Competitive Advantage
Novell OnDemand Services provide a competitive advantage unmatched in the market. The integration of this software with eDirectory and other Novell Net services for security, application integration, desktop management, and employee productivity, deliver an end-to-end network management solution for enterprise and service providers.

General Delivery Data Corporation is using Novell OnDemand Services to build out its ASP offering. Glenn Schentag had this to say, "Novell OnDemand Services is helping us develop a highly scalable, fast-to-market solution for our clients. We hope to see a huge return on investment through the use of eDirectory across the platforms we use. Novell OnDemand Services' support for other thin clients like Citrix* ICA and Microsoft's new TSAC/RDP Client, makes it a natural choice for any ASP that wants to reduce the complexities of managing multiple platforms while maintaining profitability. Additionally, the flexible consumption-based pricing model allows us to bring our offerings to market more quickly and cost-effectively."

With eDirectory, the industry's most open, secure and scalable directory service, Novell OnDemand Services customers benefit from unmatched performance and manageability. Windows*-based applications, other software, music, video, and virtually any digital or intellectual property can be put into the directory and then distributed to end users by a standard Web browser. No Novell Client software is required at the client machine. Novell OnDemand Services even allows enterprises and service providers to provision and charge for content to end users by placing a catalogue of those into the directory, providing corporate procurement and service provider eCommerce capabilities. Novell OnDemand Services enables self-provisioning based on the digital identity profile of the user, stored in the directory, eliminating the need for intervention by a system administrator, saving resources, time and money.

Novell Makes Windows Terminal Servers Easy to Deploy and Administer
Novell OnDemand Services makes it simple and more cost-effective than ever before for service providers and enterprises to deploy and administer server-based thin-client software, and Web application and service provisioning. It deploys a set of unique services that dynamically creates user credentials and applies the access and security throughout the session, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming set-up and administration.

"Novell OnDemand Services is designed to accelerate a companies transformation to eBusiness, reducing the time-to-market required to take technology from business concept to business process," said Amer Jneid director of sales at Novell. "With this new release, Novell is well positioned to compete in the larger platform market. With over 139 million NDS eDirectory users, many of which have Windows terminal servers installed, Novell OnDemand Services will find a ready market for managing and expanding their deployment."

Comprehensive Software Provisioning Solution
With the release of Novell OnDemand Services, Novell is positioned to build on its lead in the enterprise application provisioning market by extending services to the server-based computing market. To that end, Novell plans to offer a bundle of Novell OnDemand Services and Novell ZENworks® for Desktops giving organizations a comprehensive software provisioning solution. The combination of these products will give administrators the ability to manage and administer desktops, laptops and thin-client servers through a single management solution. Availability and pricing of the bundle will be announced at a later date.
