Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced it is addressing the #1 technology concern among its customers providing secure access to network resources, data and information across all networks. Security awareness is at an all time high as companies trying to move their operations to the Net face almost daily headlines about network security attacks and computer viruses. The Computer Security Institute's annual security survey revealed that 90 percent of the respondents in large corporations and government agencies detected security breaches within the last 12 months. Armed with products that leverage the stability, security and manageability of the industry's most deployed directory service, Novell® NDS® eDirectory, Novell is delivering Net services software that presents unparalleled reliability and protection helping organizations compete effectively and securely in the Net economy.

According to International Data Corporation the 3A Security Market, which includes Access, Authentication and Authorization, is expected to grow 28 percent annually to reach $7.1 billion by 2004. Drew University, Florida State Supreme Court, Micro General Data Corporation, Orange County Courts, Prince William Health System, United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense, University of Birmingham at Alabama Health System, U.S. Census Bureau and others leverage Novell's Net services software to extend and secure access to the Internet, intranet and extranet for employees, partners and customers.

The Orange County Superior Court in Orange County, Calif., has recently completed a project to implement a one Net environment, whereby the networks in its 10 office sites across the county will work as one. Leveraging Novell Net services software, they have moved much of their sensitive court operations information online, accessible through their intranet, to save time, money, and make administrative staff more productive. Richard Droll, executive director, commented, "Novell has been instrumental in helping us reduce the security barriers of using the Internet in order to better service our increasingly technology savvy public. Using their Net services software, we have begun allowing the public to access portions of our Web site for general administration information and documents, while giving judges and employees secure access to our internal network and intranet. Current projects will soon make case information accessible to the public through the Internet. Additionally, due to the strong security and reliability of Novell's products we have been able to keep unwelcome intruders at bay. We can now sleep more soundly at night."

"Novell's Net services software allows us to authenticate to internal and external applications that recognize and authorize students, teachers and administrators to access our network and intranet," said Mike Richichi, assistant director of academic technology, Drew University. "Leveraging Novell's products, we are able to give users a personalized view of their information, such as classes and grades, while protecting other sensitive and confidential information that resides on the network."

At the core of Novell's Net services is eDirectory, which provides unmatched identity management, allowing flexibility in setting network access boundaries and individual rights for internal and external users. When combined with other Net services software, like iChain,Single Sign-on, NMAS BorderManager®, Novell is helping organizations develop and implement well-defined security policies and procedures that make sense for their particular environment, and deploy efficient security services that give users the freedom to access information from wherever they connect to the network.

Automating Employee Access to Network Resources
According to IDC, the number one reason for security-related investments by companies across industries is to provide increased network access. It is anticipated that security spending will reach 15 percent of all IT budgets this year, up from 10 percent in 2000. With industry-wide corporate downsizing, the ability to instantaneously 'turn on' and 'turn off' employee access to network resources, data and information where ever it resides is a key corporate requirement. Novell customers like Freddie Mac and Gateway Computers are amplifying their security through an employee provisioning solution based on Net services software that automates employee moves, department changes, reorganizations and exits.

Delivering Return on Investment
Novell Net services software enables customers to consolidate and manage their networks, improving their bottom line and reducing traditional high costs of managing multiple systems and redundant information. Novell products run across all leading network and operating systems working within customers' existing environment. This is of particular interest to companies in a period of economic slowdown, with reduced IT staff and budget.

As the predominate collector and provider of timely, relevant and quality data about the people and economy of the United States, the Bureau of Census, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, used Novell Net services software to provide secure network access to its 5,000 permanent employees and 7,000 Decennial employees in 554 offices throughout the country. Novell's software provided a secure, reliable and scalable foundation that helped the Bureau of Census gear up for the Decennial Census, which required close to 900,000 temporary field employees.

David Sliom, branch chief of Decennial LAN staff, commented, "Novell NetWare and eDirectory are the backbone of our entire agency operations including the Decennial Census. We looked at a lot of different options, including Windows NT, and found the cost of Novell ownership to be significantly less, both from a hardware and support perspective. Additionally, we found the security features inherent in eDirectory to be stronger than other options. The scalability of the products was a very important influence in our decision. For the Decennial Census, Novell Net services software proved to be the most stable and reliable technology we had through the course of the census."

Helping Companies Meet Industry Regulations
Novell is also helping customers address security challenges imposed by industry regulations, such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Novell's broad range of products are helping healthcare companies address HIPAA challenges by delivering the ability to centrally manage and enforce end-user security policies, secure transmission of identifiable patient information over public networks, control system and application access across multiple networks at multiple locations, and better manage corporate assets.

Novell Consulting Offers Security Assessment
