Novell GroupWise coming to the Linux enterprise

• Novell GroupWise to run entirely on Linux, including client and server services, part of Novell's commitment to Linux that gives customers choice to do what's best for their enterprise
• GroupWise for Linux combines stringent security with flexible user access features and low ownership and maintenance costs

As part of its broad commitment to providing top network services to Linux users, Novell today introduced the most trusted and secure collaboration platform in the industry running entirely on Linux. Novell® GroupWise® for Linux, due the first half of 2004, will include GroupWise client and server services running entirely on Linux. A Novell Nterprise product, GroupWise handles e-mail, calendaring, instant messaging, contact management, document management and workflow services across network operating systems including Novell NetWare®, Windows NT*/2000 and now Linux.

In April, Novell announced the upcoming availability of a Java*-based GroupWise client for Linux, which will be joined by the GroupWise for Linux server component to create the complete GroupWise for Linux solution. The GroupWise Cross-Platform Client is currently in beta testing, and the server component enters beta in late September. GroupWise will also fully support and integrate with the Ximian Evolution collaboration client, which was acquired by Novell earlier this week.

Maurene Caplan Grey, research director at Gartner, said, "Increasingly, enterprises are looking at Linux and open standard platforms for their messaging and collaboration applications, as well as the ability to link such services as portals and wireless access with messaging and collaboration - often through the directory. The enterprise also wants to be well supported on Linux, just like they would be with any proprietary platform."

According to David Thomas, CIO of the Electric Power Board in Chattanooga, Tenn., the addition of Linux support to GroupWise will give Novell customers greater flexibility in platform selection and potentially lowered maintenance requirements. "As experienced GroupWise users, we are pleased to see Novell's solution for enterprise collaboration on Linux. We see Linux as a viable platform path, and Novell's move to deliver all of its network services on Linux makes every Novell product we use more valuable because of the options it gives us to do what's best for our organization. GroupWise works, and works well, and the option to run it on Linux makes it that much more appealing."
