Novell, Inc., the leading provider of Net services software, today announced the availability of Novell® iFolder, Novell's "access anywhere" information management software that liberates users from having to rely on any particular PC to retrieve information or files. With Novell iFolder, users securely access their files from any Internet-enabled machine, anywhere in the world. Novell iFolder provides a true one Net experience, enabling users to automatically and securely synchronize their files across all types of networks and on any computer.
With information exploding via the Net, it's getting harder and harder to keep track of data across multiple machines and multiple networks. Storing and accessing information is a growing challenge for businesses and individuals. Novell iFolder helps solve this problem.
"How many times have you found yourself e-mailing a document to yourself to work on at your home computer or on a laptop? Novell iFolder makes this obsolete," said James Taylor, managing partner of consulting services firm The East Cobb Group. "Our electronic bags are truly always packed with Novell iFolder, and we save the time and mistakes that inevitably occur when you have to manually update and synchronize files. Novell iFolder lets our files follow us everywhere. It is the simple and secure way to organize, manage and access our files, virtually anywhere, anytime."
Novell iFolder combines the strengths of Internet-hosted storage, hosted backups and automatic file synchronization, while rendering obsolete the weaknesses of manual synchronization, storage-space limitations, poor security and proprietary architecture. Novell iFolder uses Novell NDS® eDirectory or any other LDAP v3-enabled directory for secure user authentication. Novell iFolder works with Novell NetWare® 5.1 and Windows NT*/2000 and will be included in NetWare 6 when it ships later this year.
"With the proliferation of laptop computers and the fact that so much critical business information resides on a company's PCs, there is a tremendous need for customers to protect their data while managing it more efficiently," said Jeff Hawkins, vice president of Novell's storage business team. "Remote access to business networks is almost a given today, and Novell iFolder lets users access and manage the right data whenever they want, wherever they want, safely and securely."
Whether on an office or home PC, a disconnected notebook, or even at an Internet kiosk, a user's files are instantly available with Novell iFolder. If working offline, work is updated the instant a user reconnects. When a user moves on to a different location and a different PC, files are automatically updated to reflect work done elsewhere. And encryption keeps file synchronizations and backups secure.
According to John Girard, a vice president and research director at Gartner, "Enterprises can realize substantial support savings and productivity gains by selecting appropriate remote backup and restore tools for their nomadic users. Avoiding just a few disasters may justify the entire value of the investment."
