TradeTrans Integrates the Languages of eBusiness and Delivers Enhanced Services to its Customers with Novell exteNd

TradeTrans uses Novell exteNd to Web Service-enable EDI Exchanges and Deliver Relevant Information and Analysis to its Customers Novell exteNd "Translation services" Enable TradeTrans to Effectively Serve Customer's using EDI or XML-based Electronic Trading Practices

3 October 2002

Having built a foundation of more than 800 customers trading on its EDI-based network, TradeTrans, a leading eBusiness service exchange provider, has laid the groundwork for its future - and the future of paperless trading. TradeTrans has deployed Novell® exteNd™, an integrated suite for the development of advanced Web applications, to serve customers using either EDI- or XML-based transactions with trading partners. As a result, TradeTrans is leading the migration to the long-held promise of complete paperless trading practices with the help of Novell exteNd.

Both EDI and XML provide a standard framework for data exchange such as those employed in trading partner networks, but EDI has traditionally been expensive to implement and maintain, and thus out of reach for many small to medium-size enterprises. By using XML to Web service-enable its Commerce eXchange network, TradeTrans can now reach a broader market with its complete trading partner management and business intelligence services.

"With Novell exteNd, TradeTrans has built a next-generation service exchange that provides the best of both worlds," said Bill Bugbee, CEO of TradeTrans, Inc. "In today's tough economy, no one wants to spend a lot of money changing processes that work, but emerging Web services technologies will change the way eBusiness is conducted. TradeTrans can now provide our customers the best technology has to offer to improve business performance and reduce costs."

TradeTrans had traditionally relied solely on EDI exchanges to help its customers adopt paperless trading and knowledge-based business practices. Recognizing the potential of XML-based Web services for eBusiness, TradeTrans ultimately determined that EDI and XML should co-exist in the network, thus expanding its market from EDI-only customers to include those who use XML - while simultaneously providing its traditional EDI customers with a path to Web services.

TradeTrans turned to Novell exteNd to help it translate these two languages and enhance its ability to provide customers with relevant information and analysis. Using Novell exteNd Composer, the company's award-winning integration broker, TradeTrans can now Web service-enable EDI-transactions with no disruption or changes to its customers' existing IT architectures. In addition, TradeTrans is also using Novell exteNd Director, Novell's powerful interaction and portal server, to deliver business intelligence back to its customers.

In a matter of weeks, TradeTrans can now inexpensively automate a customer's existing paper and EDI transactions to provide a comprehensive digital commerce environment based on EDI and XML. Trading activity information is then collected and analyzed to provide its customers with visibility beyond organizational boundaries. From order entry and procurement/fulfillment through payment/collection, TradeTrans helps organizations reduce costs and improve business performance.

Novell exteNd has been deployed into TradeTrans' state-of-the-art data center, a 24x7x365 facility with built-in redundancy and security. Featuring best-in-class products, including Sun servers, Oracle databases and routers, checkpoints and firewalls from Cisco, the TradeTrans service exchange features rapid deployment capabilities and a highly scalable network to serve its more than 800 customers.
