Novell Expands Linux Solution for Retailers

The only Linux offering specifically designed for the retail industry, Novell Linux Point of Service 9 offers security, flexibility and reliability

11 April 2005

Novell today introduced its newest offering for the retail industry, Novell® Linux Point of Service 9. The new product is the only Linux* distribution designed specifically for retail point of service, combining the strengths of Novell's enterprise experience and global support with a flexible and secure platform designed to fit the needs of retailers. Unique to Novell Linux Point of Service 9 is its dual-image capability, allowing retailers to use the same client image for an in-store server and point of sale client. As a result, retail operations gain a state-of-the-art, reliable platform that runs many of today's retail applications at a lower total cost of ownership.

“Novell Linux Point of Service 9 provides customers increased flexibility and a low total cost of ownership and is an exceptional platform for Triversity's Transactionware Enterprise POS solution,” said Colin Haig, vice president of business development for Triversity, a leading provider of customer-centric software solutions for retail. “As retailers grow, their costs multiply as they open and equip more stores. Novell Linux Point of Service provides the framework customers need to deploy and support Linux. These factors, and the proven cost advantages of Linux, make it very compelling.”

Novell Linux Point of Service 9 extends the capabilities of Novell's previous retail offerings. Built on Novell's SUSE® LINUX Enterprise Server and Novell Linux Desktop platforms, the new offering provides multiple client images, from a 30 MB image requiring only 64 MB of RAM to a robust platform incorporating open source office, browser and advanced desktop technologies like KDE and GNOME*. The variety of client images enables retailers to choose the best environment for their retail applications based on their in-store requirements and skills. Novell Linux Point of Service 9 also provides the ability to perform remote installations for disk-based or diskless devices and a comprehensive systems management capability to maintain in-store systems from a centralized location.

“Linux gives us a level of reliability that retailers never could have afforded before,” said Michael Prince, CIO of Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corporation. “The systems in our retail stores are so stable they can run for six months or more without being rebooted, and we have yet to see a virus attack. Stability is crucial for these systems in order for our associates to provide top-notch customer service.”

Novell and Partners Serving the Retail Industry

Novell Linux Point of Service continues Novell's relationship with IBM, the largest retail point-of-service hardware vendor. Novell Linux Point of Service 9 is planned for the next version of the IBM* Retail Environment for SUSE LINUX, which was originally introduced in January 2004. Novell also announced today a partnership with Wincor Nixdorf, a leading provider of point-of-sale solutions for banks and retailers worldwide (see separate announcement). Novell will continue to partner with leading hardware and software vendors in the retail industry to provide a clear alternative for retailers. More than 30 retail industry software vendors support Novell's SUSE LINUX today.

“Retailers are very concerned about reducing their IT costs to improve the bottom line, and they need an operating system that is secure and reliable,” said David Patrick, vice president and general manager of Linux, Open Source Platforms and Services for Novell. “Novell Linux Point of Service builds on those Linux strengths and customizes them for retailers, making an already superior solution stronger and more effective.”

Novell Linux Point of Service 9 will be available directly from Novell, as well as from IBM through its IBM Retail Environment for SUSE LINUX 2 and from Wincor Nixdorf.
