Announcing Micro Focus Open Enterprise Server 2018

Micro Focus is pleased to announce the availability of Micro Focus Open Enterprise Server 2018 (OES 2018). Open Enterprise Server is a secure and highly available suite of enterprise-ready file, print, networking and application services.

Open Enterprise Server 2018 provides:

  • Encrypted data traffic for greater end-to-end security via SMB v3 support.
  • Mac enhancements including Salvage and Purge and SMB support for improved performance.
  • Enhanced Domain Services for Windows (DSfW) capabilities including fine-grained password policy and AES encryption for greater security, easier access to NSS Active Directory file servers using domain authentication, and expanded schema and domain functionality for enhanced integration.
  • Enhanced Storage Services (NSS) capabilities with 64-bit support including pool creation, as well as delayed block allocation to help reduce data fragmentation: all improving storage usage and performance.
  • Micro Focus iPrint for OES provides secured enterprise print services for your desktops, laptops, and mobile devices without having to install and use the Micro Focus iPrint appliance.
  • Built on SUSE® Linux Enterprise Server (SLES®) 12 SP2 base with NetIQ® eDirectory 9.0 support for the latest advancements and improvements.
  • Unified update channel that assures all patches and updates for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and other components are tested and compatible with Open Enterprise Server 2018.
  • Cloud Integrated Storage (CIS) (Technical Preview): Hybrid cloud solution that provides a secure gateway to store, manage, and access data across private or public cloud to help reduce overall storage costs.

With this OES 2018, your also get NetIQ Self Service Password Reset as an indirect entitlement to all OES customers under maintenance via their IDM Bundle Edition entitlement.

Additionally, OES customers under maintenance are entitled to use the latest version of Filr. Filr 3.3 provides support for the latest versions of Mac OS, iOS, and Android. It also sports a new Linux desktop client, as well as a Microsoft Office plugin that allows Office users to open, save, and share Office files directly to and from Filr.

Micro Focus iPrint for Open Enterprise Server 2018

Micro Focus iPrint for Open Enterprise Server (OES) now offers advanced Desktop and Mobile features for the enterprise. Open Enterprise Server 2018 users can enjoy more printing freedom and flexibility, while OES admins don’t have to install the Micro Focus iPrint appliance. Micro Focus iPrint for OES brings in several new features from the Micro Focus iPrint appliance and supports clustering as well. It scales to fit organizations of any size and provides a single solution to manage all printing needs across multiple locations.

Micro Focus iPrint for OES 2018 included capabilities:

  • Print without a client, without installing printers (QuickPrint): Users just need a web browser to upload documents/images to be printed. These printers can also provide authentication and can hold on to documents for a manual release.
  • Flexibility to hide printers (Print Portal): Allows administrators to control the visibility of printers listed for end-users.
  • A new printer install page (Print Portal): The default IPP page has been replaced with a new print portal page. This page brings in newer capabilities in terms of search and tagging printers for a better end-user experience. If you liked the IPP page instead, you can restore it too.
  • Manage multiple print servers from one Micro Focus iPrint console page (Micro Focus iPrint Console): Admins can manage multiple Micro Focus iPrint for OES deployed servers from a single page, saving valuable time when administering Micro Focus iPrint.
  • Supports High Availability: Admins can deploy Micro Focus iPrint for OES on top of OES Clustering services.

Micro Focus iPrint for OES 2018 capabilities that require additional purchase of licenses:

  • Print from any Mobile Device: Print, track and release jobs from your mobile device using the Micro Focus iPrint app. Apps have the capabilities to track walkup jobs for your identity and can track jobs from all your devices.
  • Support for Mobile Device Management Software: Monitor, manage and secure employees' mobile devices that are deployed across multiple mobile service providers and across multiple mobile operating systems being used in the organization. Micro Focus iPrint app is coded to AppConfig community standards and plays well with MobileIron and is Android for Work Certified.

What’s New in Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1

Building on the great base of Open Enterprise Server 2015, OES 2015 SP1 has new key features and enhancements that are sure to please.

  • Salvage/Purge support for CIFS users: Self-service file recovery and clean-up capabilities are available over CIFS for both NetIQ eDirectory and Active Directory (AD) users using the very light weight file access rights management explorer shell extension.
  • Policy-based purge: Automatically purge the files in the salvage system based on policies. The policies today can be based on time or file extension or a combination of both.
  • CIFS/SMB enhancements: Improved performance and interoperability with Mac clients, better performance overall.
  • Improved disk storage allocation policies: Enjoy contiguous disk allocation which significantly reduces fragmentation from happening. Get better read performance and significantly improved backup performance.
  • NSS and AD Integration enhancements: We now support multiple AD forests and users in a trusted AD forest(s) can access NSS resources in a given forest. Further FTP support is also now available along with remote server navigation capabilities for AD users as well.
  • Auditing enhancements: Audit filters have been improved to allow for more granular audit logging.
  • Micro Focus branding: Micro Focus believes in Open Enterprise Server and wants you to know it. It’s more than just a name change—it’s a commitment to the future of OES.

Micro Focus iPrint for Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1

Micro Focus iPrint for Open Enterprise Server (OES) now offers advanced Desktop and Mobile features for the enterprise. Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1 users can now print to their current printers from their mobile devices (paid-for feature) and Chromebooks in addition to their desktop environment without having to install the Micro Focus iPrint appliance. Micro Focus iPrint for OES brings in several new features from the Micro Focus iPrint Appliance and supports clustering as well. It scales to fit organizations of any size and provides a single solution to manage all printing needs across multiple locations.

Highlights of this release are:

  • WalkUp Printing: Save costs, while creating convenience to release jobs on any printer.
  • Mobile-Ready: Micro Focus iPrint for OES is ready to process jobs from mobile devices. No need to install new software when you’re going to enable mobile printing. Note: Use of mobile printing still requires purchase of mobile licenses.
  • Chromebook Support: Micro Focus iPrint clients on Chromebook is supported with Micro Focus iPrint for OES.
  • Email Print: Mail to print with a Global mail ID or private mail ID for printers.
  • Cluster-aware: All features from Micro Focus iPrint for OES are cluster aware and will work with your Micro Focus iPrint resources on cluster.

Note: Micro Focus iPrint for OES is available for Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1 only. Micro Focus iPrint for Open Enterprise Server 2015 SP1 can be downloaded by existing customers under maintenance through the customer center.
