Silicon Valley Visit Advances the Duke of Edinburgh Award Program
Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVL), a leader in Net services software, today hosted a visit of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh at its San Jose campus. Prince Philip was visiting Novell as part of a U.S. tour promoting the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, which in the United States is partnered with The Congressional Award.
While at Novell, Prince Philip viewed and participated in a demonstration of Novell's biometrics technology, which uses facial scans and fingerprint authentication as tools to keep computers, Web sites, and companies as a whole, safer from intruders. The Prince has a long-standing interest in scientific and technological research and development in the United Kingdom. As Chancellor of both Cambridge University and Edinburgh University, Prince Philip is well aware of the part that technology is playing in the world of education.
The Award encompasses activities for young people, ages 14-25 around the world, recognizing teens and young adults for participating in four Award categories: service (community and family responsibility), expeditions (cultivating a spirit of adventure), skills (developing cultural, vocational or manual skills) and physical recreation (encouraging improved performance and physical fitness). The Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Congressional Award allows participants to set their own course of action for completing the program, and many of the children and young adults are now incorporating technology into their achievement goals.
Novell Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt welcomed His Royal Highness during a luncheon in his honor with both local and European customers at Novell. The aim of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award program is self-improvement, and participants compete only against themselves. As they move through the various levels of the program, participants receive certificates and badges for completing certain activities. These young people come from all walks of life, able-bodied and disabled, from varying social circumstances, and all are encouraged to explore new areas of learning and to discover new talents. Novell is a supporter of the Education Trust of the Award.
