Novell today announced that broadcaster Carlton Television has deployed Novell Net business solutions to link its disparate satellite offices and deliver reliable television services to its audience across the West Country and Wales. Carlton Television's decision to implement Novell GroupWise 6, ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 and NetWare 5.1 was driven by the company's need to integrate multiple IT systems following the acquisition of HTV in 2001.

HTV has now completed the penultimate phase of its rollout, which involved a company-wide migration from the existing Microsoft Exchange* package to GroupWise 6. The migration to GroupWise 6 brings the acquired broadcast divisions in line with the standards of Carlton Television as the parent company, and provides enhanced levels of security and remote email access capabilities to the company's geographically dispersed workforce.

"Although deploying NetWare 5.1 would give us the option to maintain a mixed environment, we made a decision to migrate from Exchange to GroupWise as we felt this was the most secure platform available," said Gareth Wright, technical manager for Carlton's West Country region. "What's more, Novell's GroupWise solution effectively frees our employees from the confines of the office, allowing them to work from any location using the Web access capability. Our plan to upgrade to NetWare 6 in the near future will give us even more remote and mobile capabilities, providing secure data and network access for all employees."

ZENworks for Desktops 3.2 played an instrumental role in ensuring that disparate IT systems from the acquired companies were tightly integrated. "Using Novell ZENworks for Desktops, new and existing applications can be pushed out from a central workstation quickly and efficiently, which has significantly reduced network management time and costs while increasing employee productivity. This tool enables us to get new employees up and running in the shortest possible time with all the applications they need to do their jobs, regardless of where they are located or what device they are using," said Gareth Wright.

Carlton Television will roll out NetWare 6 across the organization later this year. The integrated iFolder™ and iPrintÔ features of NetWare 6 will further enhance the remote working capabilities of the company's employees, especially for staff that often require access to networked data outside of the office, and outside of the firewall.

"Carlton faced a real business challenge of how to integrate and standardize multiple IT systems and processes seamlessly without causing disruption to the everyday business of employees," said Steve Brown, regional director for Novell in the UK, Ireland, Middle East and Africa. "Novell's Net business solutions have given Carlton the tools it needs to reduce the complexity of its network and lower its overall IT costs so it can focus on driving the business forward."
