Novell Drives Forward Developer Momentum with Enhanced Partner Program

Novell enhances benefits, provides new market opportunities for software and hardware partners Introduction of PartnerNet program for independent software and hardware vendors is latest step in expanding Novell relationship with partner and developer communities Novell's recent moves to embrace open source are gaining significant developer traction

8 September 2003

Continuing its strong forward momentum in engaging with the partner community, Novell today said it would bring its software developer and hardware partners into its PartnerNet® program, providing new resources for independent software and hardware vendors and helping them leverage Novell's global reach more effectively. The program benefits commercial developers whose products can be integrated with Novell's industry-leading technologies as well as those who want to embed or bundle Novell technologies into their products.

The move marks another key step in Novell's renewed focus on developers, following April's creation of Novell® Forge, a resource for open source development tapping Novell technologies, and the August acquisition of Ximian, a Linux innovator and leader in several leading open source development projects. Independent software and hardware vendors (ISV/IHVs) now join Novell's integrator, channel and training partners under the PartnerNet umbrella, creating an increasingly large and dynamic partner ecosystem around Novell solutions.

One of the first technology companies to build an extensive channel program, Novell has long understood the value of partners in driving its solutions into the markets. Novell's PartnerNet program, which initially covered value-added resellers and solutions providers, has expanded over the last several years to encompass Novell's training partners, as well as top strategic corporate allies like Dell, HP, SAP, Bearing Point, Deloitte & Touche, and more. Today, Novell adds an additional piece to the PartnerNet puzzle by bringing ISV/IHVs into the program, creating a single framework for partners to interact with Novell and an extensive partner community that will allow synergies between Novell's partner groups to be tapped more effectively in partner-to-partner business relationships.

"Technology solutions are becoming increasingly powerful, but also increasingly complex. It's incumbent on a company like Novell to make sure we, not the customer, deal with that complexity. We can't do this without partners - lots of partners," said Chris Stone, vice chairman, office of the CEO of Novell. "By expanding PartnerNet to include ISVs and IHVs, we now have a great mechanism for getting the right partners - whether developers, systems integrators, hardware vendors, or resellers - working together to deliver the best solution for our customers. The net effect is increased opportunities for Novell and for our partners, with better service for our customers."

While Novell has long had relationships with ISVs and IHVs, bringing this group formally into the PartnerNet program brings a number of benefits. Members can tap Novell's large global network of both customers and partners more effectively. They enjoy the freedom of choice of Novell's cross-platform approach, giving them the flexibility to build on and for NetWare®, Linux or mixed environments. In addition, Novell offers an extensive range of integration support and training to ISV/IHVs via a PartnerNet link with Novell's long-running and successful DeveloperNet® program.

By plugging into the Novell partner ecosystem, software and hardware partners can help make their product the tool-of-choice for Novell and its channel and systems integrator partners as they deliver customer solutions. "When selecting our route to market we have found a tremendous amount of value in teaming up with other Novell partners around Europe, allowing us to leverage their technical and commercial knowledge," said Lee Chadwick, Worldwide Sales and Marketing director of UK-based Touchpaper, a leading supplier of fully integrated IT Service Management and CRM solutions.

Solutions created with Novell networking, secure identity, J2EE* and Web services, and resource management technologies are based on industry standards, and work on many platforms, including Linux. Developers building on these Novell technologies are assured a wide addressable market. Novell exteNd™ gives developers the ability to transform applications, processes and information into Web services without the need to deal with the complexities of the backend infrastructure. Novell Nsure™ solutions offer a secure and robust identity and access management platform as a foundation for unifying application identity information and policies with other systems customers have in place. Novell's aggressive support of open source development via its Novell Forge site and Novell Ximian Services leadership on key open source initiatives provide special incentive for open source developers to join the program.

"In the last six months, Novell has taken significant strides to engage the open source development community," said Chris Cooper, director of developer services for Novell. "We've grown to more than 275 open source projects hosted on Novell Forge, with 1,700 registered members, and we're getting 100,000 plus hits per month. Add this to Novell's commitment to maintaining Ximian's leadership in open source initiatives like GNOME and Mono, and it's clear that Novell is putting major resources and brainpower behind open source development."
