Ximian Red Carpet management services to be included in Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0, which is due for delivery later this year Nterprise Linux Services open beta to be available mid-October

8 September 2003

As one of the first benefits of Novell's recent acquisition of Linux innovator Ximian, Novell today announced management services from Ximian® Red Carpet™ will be included in Novell® Nterprise™ Linux Services 1.0, which is due for delivery later this year. Novell also announced the open beta availability of Nterprise Linux Services, giving customers file, print, messaging, directory and management services in an integrated package that runs and will be supported on the Red Hat* Enterprise Linux and SuSE* Linux Enterprise Server distributions.

"As Novell's Linux strategy rapidly unfolds to customers, the benefits are becoming plain to see," said Chris Stone, Novell vice chairman - Office of the CEO. "We're moving more of Novell's rock-solid networking technology to Linux, supporting it along with Linux, and now integrating Ximian products to benefit customers immediately. Novell is in the business of delivering useful solutions that don't waste customers' time and money, and Nterprise Linux Services is that kind of solution. More choice is the key. Whether Novell technology, open source or some combination, the right answer is whatever's best for the given customer."

The initial version of Novell Nterprise Linux Services is comprised of a number of Novell network services integrated into a single business solution. These include management services via Novell Ximian Red Carpet, identity services via Novell eDirectory™ and DirXML®, file services via Novell iFolder®, printing services via iPrint, messaging services via NetMail™, and a Virtual Office for end-user access and productivity via exteNd Director™ Standard Edition. In addition, Novell iManager provides a browser-based, single point of administration for Nterprise Linux Services.

Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0, which will be accompanied by comprehensive Novell technical support, training and consulting services for Linux, is a key steppingstone to running all of Novell's advanced network services for business on Linux, including the entire services stack in future versions of Novell NetWare®. The recently released NetWare 6.5 and Nterprise Linux Services provide parallel paths for NetWare and Linux users until the full set of networking services comes together in a future Novell offering which will run on both operating systems. This will further enable customers to effectively choose what's best for their present and future enterprise.

Nterprise Linux Services is part of Novell Nterprise, a set of offerings that improve communication, simplify and automate network management, and allow workers to be productive regardless of location, device or platform. Open beta versions of Novell Nterprise Linux Services 1.0 will be available mid-October. Pricing and general availability will be announced at a later date.
